Accountability, to me, is a lot like parenting or driving in that it is easy to feel WE are good at it, while OTHERS are horrible. ?But look within! ?Are you a Supervisor, Manager, Director or “Boss” of others in any form? ?Would you call yourself a “boss” or would you prefer to be called a Leader!? ?What’s the difference? ?One place to look is Accountability!
For one, a boss is TOTALLY willing to hold other people accountable whereas a leader, in addition to offering accountability is also willing to hold themselves accountable (or allow themselves to be held accountable). ?Moreover, someone embracing the identity of “Boss” is likely to rely on their authority and power to “fire” someone as their main tool of Accountability. ?Leaders, on the other hand, get permission?they collaborate with their direct reports on what is possible both in their potential and actual results. ?Leaders?inspire, empower and support their direct reports creating in them a DESIRE TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!
