Mind The Gap: Teaching vs Training

Mind The Gap: Teaching vs Training

During my visit to London for the 2012 Summer Games I got inspired for a blog series. In the London Underground, “Mind the Gap” is the constant warning to see and beware of the space between the platform and the train door literally a matter of life and death! Boarding my blog, however, is a 2-minute focus on the valuable difference between words or concepts that otherwise used interchangeably from appearing similar.

What IS the difference, for example, between Teaching and Training?

First of all, why are they similar? Because teaching and training both involve LEARNING! It’s not as philosophical as asking “does the fallen tree make a “sound” in the forrest if no one is there to hear it?” when I ask:

“If no learner is present or no learning has occurred, can it be said that either teaching or training HAS?”

Of course not! So, learning if a necessary component for both why not just call teaching and training “learning” instead of teaching or training? Why are there different words for “learning”? Well, its kind of obvious that teaching is about “knowing” and Training, teaching, Get a Klu- Learning Quotetraining is about DOING! For me, its deeper than that. When I really MIND THE GAP to seek value in that difference, it all comes down to Accountability and the worthlessness of teaching WITHOUT training! Let me explain…

Some people in the world learn just for learning’s sake…the information itself IS the reward, so a “grade” has no power of accountability in those cases. Otherwise, without also training, the highest and best reward of being “taught” is getting a letter grade.

“The goal in teaching is what the learner “gets”…whereas with training, the goal is about what the learner can now “do/give”!

MIND THE GAP: We can never train without teaching while we CAN teach without training! But, WHY? Why teach at all without ALSO Training?

Not only can teaching make NO GUARANTEE that the learner will continue to “know” what they have learned, but there is also NO CHANCE of ensuring that the learner will now be able to DO something they were previously unable to do. And, it may seem that Teaching has accountability through quizzes, assignments, exams and, most importantly, due dates and terms (semester, quarter, etc.), but what can be “known” can also be forgotten! Worse yet, ?because “getting a good grade” is the goal, students will: cram, cheat, lie, beg and actually commit fraud to “get a grade”…all the while learning NOTHING! Most of my students admit to forgetting an aced final exam’s worth of “knowledge” in less than 72 hours after the exam (achem, in their other classes, achem). ūüôā

When the only thing you are held accountable for (being taught) is “to know” something…the only thing you are really learning is how to remember and forget something. However, once you are “trained” to ride a bike, you’ll “know” forever!

I believe that no matter where you’re at in your life or career, it’s important to be a lifelong learner…but it is even MORE important to be a lifelong TRAINEE! Always ask yourself “What will I be able to DO after this learning experience that I cannot DO now?”

Unless you are part of the 1/7 (one seventh) of our population that values learning JUST for learning’s sake (and even if you ARE), I urge you to make sure there is a “training” component to everything you are taught. Hold your learning experiences accountable to making sure YOU can be held accountable to apply that knowledge to a better life, business or career AFTER the learning has been learned.

Teaching alone can’t promise “application”, the learning MUST include training to do that!

So, what are YOU doing to sharpen your saw? How are you staying competitive and “hirable” through the acquisition of skills and abilities you previously didn’t have? I’d love to hear from you about your experiences and how you choose to learn. Mind The Gap: Success vs Achievement

During my visit to London for the 2012 Summer Games I got inspired for a blog series. In the London Underground, “Mind the Gap” is the constant warning to “see and beware?”of the space between the platform and the train door literally a matter of life and death! Boarding my blog, however, this same phrase is a plea to consider the “valuable difference” between words or concepts that otherwise appear quite similar a difference that I hope empowers self and others!

What IS the difference, for example, between Success and Achievement?

Success is defined as an accomplishment of an aim or purpose however, all too often, we use the term to describe “status” or the amount of money/things a person has. Who comes to mind when you think of who you know that is “Successful”?success_achievement_status_get_a_klu

Achievement, on the other hand, is defined as things done successfully. Having many/repetitive successes will pave the way towards the achievement! Achievement comes from being successful many times over yet, ironically, achievement does not guarantee one’s success! Who comes to mind when you think of who you know that has achieved something in life achieved something WITH their life?

Mind the Gap! The difference between Success and Achievement is subtle because they are co-dependent. They need each other to exist. And, isn’t it interesting how things can be achieved unsuccessfully (passing class with a “C” is an achievement, even if not a successful one), yet nothing can be achieved without one ore more things being done successfully (even the “C” student succeeds 70-80% of the time)!

But while Achievement is verifiable, Success is a bit more subjective. And THAT difference is HUGE!
Get a Klu Success Bolt
You can believe you have success while others believe you are nowhere close to it!? Or, you may NOT believe yourself to be successful at the same time that millions would literally risk their lives to be YOU! All the while, an achievement is an achievement regardless of the pedigree, honor or heroism ascribed to it, it can be verified and agreed upon when someone achieves something.

The good and bad news is that Success is mostly a state of mind. You can feel successful without physically/tangibly achieving anything, whereas achievement is more tangible. You must see something accomplished, or accomplish a goal yourself in order to have achieved something.

It really all comes down to standards. The standards you set for yourself will determine what you set out to achieve and the degree to which the pursuit and attainment of those achievements will?require and/or bring you success. But until you set standards, the difference between Success and Achievement is truly a “chicken-or-egg” conversation that will most likely get you nowhere!Success vs. Achievement Mind the Gap for Get a Klu

Private Coaching is a GREAT place to get clarity on your standards to become crystal clear on the achievements you most wish to pursue in life/business/career. The difference between Success and Achievement is the standards you set but the difference between setting them and just thinking about them COULD BE effective coaching!

Many people confuse having a friend that will be an ?Accountability Partner? with having a trained professional serve as an ?Accountability Coach??and their results show it! This part also relates to this month’s OOHs topic on relationships so it’s a very fitting time for me to bring up accountability again.

Coaching While Driving? Celebrating the Big 5-0!

To kick off 2016, I created a series of Drive-By Coaching videos on goal setting. Now I’m back with a new Drive-By Coaching video and I’m here to celebrate the BIG 5-0 in the latest edition of Drive-By Coaching. No I’m not talking about 50 videos, being 50 years old (I still got a few years) , or a 50th anniversary. What I AM talking about is the celebration of it being 50 days into 2016! Can you believe we are nearing the end of Q1? This means NOW?is the perfect time to take inventory on where you’re at with the goals and resolutions you set at the beginning of the year.

First, I’d like to ask you a question: Would you be willing to give away 1/7th of your income? I’m not talking about investing or donating. I mean just throwing it out the window!?Most of you will?immediately say?NO. Well 50 days into the year is about 1/7th of the year, and if you are already falling behind on your goals (or if you still don’t have goals), you are essentially giving away 1/7 of your resources for achieving MORE this year.

Coaching Get A Klu ResolutionsNow, two more questions?: How are you doing with your resolutions? How are you doing on your goals for Q1 and your annual goals?

If you don?t have positive/measurable answers, then maybe you SKIPPED GOAL SETTING or have ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY in your life. Don’t worry, there is still plenty of time left in the year, but before you know it, we?ll be 100 days in, then halfway through the year!

Catch my full Drive-By Coaching video on Facebook to ensure you’re able to CELEBRATE the big 5-0 rather than read?that you’re already falling back into new habits.

If you want to make sure you’re getting the latest Drive-By Coaching videos, join The Klu Yard on Facebook. My videos are posted on Facebook?first before anywhere else.

Why 2 Complimentary Sessions?

Why 2 Complimentary Sessions?

If you follow my blog posts or social media updates, you have most likely heard me mention my 2 complimentary coaching sessions. People are often surprised to hear that I do this and may question my strategy. I often hear things like, “How can you afford to give away 2 sessions?”, “Won’t people just take the 2 free sessions and run?” I love getting these questions because it gives me a chance to share my progress as a business coach and how I came up with this program in the first place.

When I started training to be a¬†coach in 2007, my goal¬†was to close leads I was given from the higher ups. In training, we were taught¬†to conduct a “complimentary session” and be able to “enroll anyone in Coaching inside of 45 minutes.” ¬†I say¬†“complimentary session” in quotes because it wasn’t a coaching session, only. ¬†Much of the script/time was dedicated¬†to SELL Coaching. It was a challenge for me to do this because I did not feel like I gave the person enough value or enough of an experience of what Coaching is REALLY like for them¬†to “buy” Coaching inside of 45 minutes…well, 30 IF I left 15 for the “sales” part of it. ¬† Yes, even though my assessments prove I excel¬†at sales, the strategy did not work for me and I was not an effective seller when following¬†a formula I did not fully believe in.

Never mind the fact that I put “my money where my mouth is” and created my OWN Coaches Training ProgramComplimentary Sessions Get A Klu Coaches Training Workbook…and MY program teaches exactly how I conduct 2 Comp Sessions in a way that built my coaching business to what it is today…nevermind that…

…the problem THEN was that I got the “you did WHAT!?????” when I told Mary Ann that I enrolled in a Coaches Training Program and¬†I was facing epic failure and potentially divorce if I didn’t figure out how to MAKE A LIVING as a Coach! ¬†Let’s just say that I knew I wanted to come up with a more effective way to get paying Coaching Clients!

For many reasons in addition to “necessity”, I soon figured out that offering 2 complimentary sessions was my¬†answer! ¬†Here are three main reasons why!

  1. Little Pink Spoons!– My complimentary coaching sessions are set to give you the ACTUAL experience of what Coaching with Get A Klu will really be like. ¬†And, honestly, one session alone would never be able to do that because Accountability is such a HUGE % of what people are really paying for when they “buy” coaching. ¬†Baskin Robins doesn’t ask for your credit card when they give you the little pink spoon…they wait to let you taste it, fully, and they wait some more in case you need to taste anything else for comparison. ¬†They know that if you feel FREE to taste and to FULLY taste, that you are more likely to buy….and buy willingly (vs. being pressured). ¬†The key, however, is that if you don’t commit to something in one session that you are then held accountable for in the next session, how will you ever “taste” what Accountability really feels like…how it will be delivered…if it will work, etc.?
  2. Avoid Commission Breath!-People are not stupid…but, no matter how stupid they are, they are always smart enough to know “the pitch is coming”…especially if there is only ONE “Comp Session”…the pitch HAS to be coming during that session, no? ¬†Yes! ¬†So, by offering TWO free sessions, people know that the first one is TRULY FREE…and it is TRULY coaching instead of a veiled sales pitch. ¬†Honestly, who on earth doesn’t know that the “complimentary consultation” or “free sample” is not part of the sales process? ¬†But with 2 Comp Sessions, you KNOW the first one is free if there is also a second one. ¬†Imagine that feeling of having your guard up just WAITING for the sales pitch/pressure to come. ¬†Well, you know that won’t happen in the first session (90 minutes) if there is a second free session. ¬†I get to joke around and say things like, “you only get the second one if you LIKE the first one!” ¬†No one can “receive” free coaching if their guard is UP waiting for the sales pitch…2 comp sessions “lowers the guard” and allowed for TRUE coaching to be delivered/sampled (again, see #1 above).
  3. Never Nervous When I’m in SERVICE!-¬†I believe in service…in selflessly helping others…AND, as Zig Ziglar taught us, that “everything I want will come to me if I remain committed to helping others get what they want!” ¬†So, I am NEVER worried about “giving my time away”, nor will I EVER deny someone 2 Comp Sessions just because they may not be able to afford to hire me. ¬†Without judgement and needing NOTHING in return, I approach every single complimentary coaching session with everything I’ve got. ¬†There have been times where 1 or 2 sessions was all it took for a prospect to realize the next steps to take…where 2 comp sessions was ALL they needed even if they COULD afford to hire me. ¬†And, of course, there are times when¬†someone doesn’t hire me ¬†because they feel they cannot afford it. ¬†This doesn’t matter to me because its not ABOUT me when I am coaching…it is ALL about the person getting coached. ¬†I still do my best to make sure that after 2 sessions, the person’s life has changed. (By the way, for people who truly can’t afford my full coaching services, I now offer Online Office Hours, or OOHs as I like to call them…this is a very affordable way to get coaching from me…check it out!). ¬†I digress…

So, If you have ever wondered what Coaching is all about…how it works…or, if it could work for you, I highly encourage you to sign up for my 2 complimentary coaching sessions. I’ll look forward to your request, and promise the experience to be life-changing in some way! ¬†You can sign up HERE or email me directly at: info@getaklu.net.
