Mind the Gap:  Happiness vs. Joy!

During my visit to London for the 2012 Summer Games I got inspired for a blog series. In the London Underground, “Mind the Gap” is the constant warning to “see and beware” of the space between the platform and the train door literally a matter of life and death! Boarding my blog, however, this same phrase is a plea to consider the “valuable difference” between words or concepts that otherwise appear quite similar a difference that I am hoping leads us to decisions or behavior that empowers self and others!

What IS the difference, for example, between Happiness and Joy?happiness vs joy

A great way to “Mind the Gap” between happiness and joy would be to focus on the dichotomy of internal vs. external, or the temporary vs. the lasting? NOT that these dichotomies are opposed, per se.

Yet, happiness is the state of mind that is a reaction to something EXTERNAL. You got or witnessed or tasted something that made you feel happy. The feeling is GREAT, but not lasting! The feeling comes when someone or something OTHER THAN YOU does something that makes you happy!

Joy is also an emotion/state of mind, but its origins and causes live INTERNALLY as a function of having done something significant in, of, for and by OURSELVES! Joy is lasting, contagious and productive. ?Joy rises in status above and beyond a pure emotion as a RESOURCE that lives in an accessible way inside of us. It?s there inside of you right now!

STOP waiting around for others to make you happy! START a habit of looking within and asking yourself what you are proud of, or grateful for in your life. Seriously, do it now. What are you proud of and grateful for?keep-calm-and-look-within-1Do you feel that? When you look within through the lenses of self-love, self-compassion and gratitude, you will have tapped into the magnetic, attractive, contagious and productive emotion of JOY!

It?s been a while since I have written a blog post so I?m excited to share an update as I recently returned from a Coaching?trip to Australia…all thanks to concept of “white labels!”

Get A Klu in AustraliaPart of having a winning strategy is being able to use ?White Labels? for your business services. If you didn’t know, “white labels” refer to offering my services to partnering organizations I am contracted with. ?So, in addition to my own “self-generated” clients for Get A Klu, Inc. I also have contracts with great organizations that bring wonderful assignments my way. ?From Wolf Management Consultants to Workplace Training Network to the “source” of my recent trip to Australia: ?My Coaching Organization (owned by JT Foxx).

These contracts I have with partnering organizations put ??white labels? over the name Get A Klu, Inc., so my business name isn?t promoted and I?m marketed as?someone on their team, known as ?Coach Jeffrey? or the “Ambassador of Assessments” or “Jeff the Trainer” and so forth.

White label opportunities are expanding?my ability to deliver and serve. It?s not all about me or the Get A Klu brand…it?s about the work that I?m doing and the people I?m helping….and I worked with some great people in Australia!

It?s common knowledge that nobody succeeds alone, at least very rarely does someone rise to the top with no help whatsoever. Usually if you?re successful it?s because someone helped you along the way. ?So why not create?partnerships with others and make helping others/getting help part of your business success strategy? You have already proven that you?re more successful with the help of others. White labels are just a way to monetize the partnerships we create.

“Coach Jeffrey” is exactly how I was referred to in Australia. JT Foxx’s “My Coaching Organization” sent me there to conduct 5 full days of?one-on-one trainings for 3 of their VIP’s . ?All I had to do was hop on the plane and prep for my own coaching sessions.?They got me a 1 bedroom apartment for a week in Perth Australia and the “students” came to me…we did our work in the apartment and it was full immersion into Speaking and Coaching training.

Even with White Labels, ?I?m providing the same services that I do for my own clients, and I?m giving just as much value doing what I?m good at. ?I have the humility to not need my company name behind the work. ?Its about the service I provide…and, who would turn down being paid $1000’s of dollars to take an all expenses paid trip (plus a per diem) to Australia…to help people grown their Speaking and Coaching businesses? ?The hardest “work” of the trip was planes and airports…but as you can imagine, talking to people and helping them with strategy, motivation, accountability and transformation comes very easy to me now.

I know I worked hard…I know I made a difference…but Coaching and Training comes so naturally to me know that this White Labels trip to Australia “felt” like being gifted a bucket list experience?away from my own hustle and bustle or Teaching Classes, running Get A Klu and supporting my wife’s corporate career by handling all parenting duties during her 50%?travel schedule.

Most of my time there was spent working, but I did get a little down time to explore Australia. Check out my photos below for a glimpse of my trip. Most of my time was spent in Perth. Some of my favorite moments include tasting kangaroo for the very first time, enjoying the famous wine cruise to Swan River Valley and just people watching while walking around the downtown area my apartment was conveniently located in.

The bottom line is that nobody succeeds alone. Align yourself with other leaders in your industry, find out what services they offer and see where you can help fill in the gaps. Creating white label offerings can be challenging, but at the same time very rewarding.

If you follow my blog posts or social media updates, you have most likely heard me mention my 2 complimentary coaching sessions. People are often surprised to hear that I do this and may question my strategy. I often hear things like, “How can you afford to give away 2 sessions?”, “Won’t people just take the 2 free sessions and run?” I love getting these questions because it gives me a chance to share my progress as a business coach and how I came up with this program in the first place.

When I started training to be a coach in 2007, my goal was to close leads I was given from the higher ups. In training, we were taught to conduct a “complimentary session” and be able to “enroll anyone in Coaching inside of 45 minutes.”  I say “complimentary session” in quotes because it wasn’t a coaching session, only.  Much of the script/time was dedicated to SELL Coaching. It was a challenge for me to do this because I did not feel like I gave the person enough value or enough of an experience of what Coaching is REALLY like for them to “buy” Coaching inside of 45 minutes…well, 30 IF I left 15 for the “sales” part of it.   Yes, even though my assessments prove I excel at sales, the strategy did not work for me and I was not an effective seller when following a formula I did not fully believe in.

Never mind the fact that I put “my money where my mouth is” and created my OWN Coaches Training ProgramComplimentary Sessions Get A Klu Coaches Training Workbook…and MY program teaches exactly how I conduct 2 Comp Sessions in a way that built my coaching business to what it is today…nevermind that…

…the problem THEN was that I got the “you did WHAT!?????” when I told Mary Ann that I enrolled in a Coaches Training Program and I was facing epic failure and potentially divorce if I didn’t figure out how to MAKE A LIVING as a Coach!  Let’s just say that I knew I wanted to come up with a more effective way to get paying Coaching Clients!

For many reasons in addition to “necessity”, I soon figured out that offering 2 complimentary sessions was my answer!  Here are three main reasons why!

  1. Little Pink Spoons!– My complimentary coaching sessions are set to give you the ACTUAL experience of what Coaching with Get A Klu will really be like.  And, honestly, one session alone would never be able to do that because Accountability is such a HUGE % of what people are really paying for when they “buy” coaching.  Baskin Robins doesn’t ask for your credit card when they give you the little pink spoon…they wait to let you taste it, fully, and they wait some more in case you need to taste anything else for comparison.  They know that if you feel FREE to taste and to FULLY taste, that you are more likely to buy….and buy willingly (vs. being pressured).  The key, however, is that if you don’t commit to something in one session that you are then held accountable for in the next session, how will you ever “taste” what Accountability really feels like…how it will be delivered…if it will work, etc.?
  2. Avoid Commission Breath!-People are not stupid…but, no matter how stupid they are, they are always smart enough to know “the pitch is coming”…especially if there is only ONE “Comp Session”…the pitch HAS to be coming during that session, no?  Yes!  So, by offering TWO free sessions, people know that the first one is TRULY FREE…and it is TRULY coaching instead of a veiled sales pitch.  Honestly, who on earth doesn’t know that the “complimentary consultation” or “free sample” is not part of the sales process?  But with 2 Comp Sessions, you KNOW the first one is free if there is also a second one.  Imagine that feeling of having your guard up just WAITING for the sales pitch/pressure to come.  Well, you know that won’t happen in the first session (90 minutes) if there is a second free session.  I get to joke around and say things like, “you only get the second one if you LIKE the first one!”  No one can “receive” free coaching if their guard is UP waiting for the sales pitch…2 comp sessions “lowers the guard” and allowed for TRUE coaching to be delivered/sampled (again, see #1 above).
  3. Never Nervous When I’m in SERVICE!- I believe in service…in selflessly helping others…AND, as Zig Ziglar taught us, that “everything I want will come to me if I remain committed to helping others get what they want!”  So, I am NEVER worried about “giving my time away”, nor will I EVER deny someone 2 Comp Sessions just because they may not be able to afford to hire me.  Without judgement and needing NOTHING in return, I approach every single complimentary coaching session with everything I’ve got.  There have been times where 1 or 2 sessions was all it took for a prospect to realize the next steps to take…where 2 comp sessions was ALL they needed even if they COULD afford to hire me.  And, of course, there are times when someone doesn’t hire me  because they feel they cannot afford it.  This doesn’t matter to me because its not ABOUT me when I am coaching…it is ALL about the person getting coached.  I still do my best to make sure that after 2 sessions, the person’s life has changed. (By the way, for people who truly can’t afford my full coaching services, I now offer Online Office Hours, or OOHs as I like to call them…this is a very affordable way to get coaching from me…check it out!).  I digress…

I have never hosted a Group Coaching program. ?However, for the last couple years (for students in my Public Speaking Classes), I have hosted “Sunday Night Office Hours” in my Online Platform with?Learn it Live. ?It’s kinda like Group Coaching.

The format is REAL SIMPLE: ?Answer questions from participants and if there are no participants, cover content! ?Oh, and I record all the sessions so they can be viewed by any student that cannot attend “LIVE”…OH, and I also upload docs, audios, videos and powerpoints into the “Content Library” that is accessible by all participants too!

I have gotten such great feedback on the helpfulness of these sessions that I have decided to launch Get A Klu’s Group Coaching Platform for a broader audience! ?I don’t have ALL the details worked out yet, but here’s what I DO know…

Senior Stay or GoTM is a Real Estate Team at Pacific Sotheby’s in Del Mar looking for Sales Professionals to expand our mission of assisting seniors and their families through the sale of a home.

By serving as the single point of contact for the comprehensive services necessary to drive top dollar for the residence, Senior Stay or GoTMprovides a “concierge-level” approach to assisting Seniors and their families in all matters related to the transition.

We are looking for someone who wants to launch or advance their RealEstate Career while furthering our “brand” of Senior Advocacy.  Is that you?

The Successful Candidate(s) will mainly be responsible for:

  • Execute existing Probate Marketing System:
  • Create and Manage Senior Community relationships
  • Provide Full-Service Representation to Buyers, Investors and Sellers of Real Estate

Qualifications- The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • 3-5 years experience in Commission-only Sales (realestate preferred but not required)
