MIND THE GAP!!!! What IS the difference, for example, between a Resolution and a Goal?

I’d like to revisit my original Goals vs Resolutions Mind The Gap post because I have some updates! We’re nearing the end of the first month of 2016, and that means that many of you have already broken your resolutions. In fact, research proves that 88% of resolutions are broken within 30 days. Goals, however, have a much higher percentage of being achieved, as long as you have the right tools.

Let’s take a look at the difference.

Get A Klu ResolutionsResolutions are usually very easily set and JUST AS EASILY given up on. Many times they involve you withholding something in your life that you enjoy. They also don’t have a specific measurable description. They are assumed that we must keep the resolution for the entire year, which is a very long period to do something, especially without any accountability. Examples:

  • I will give up alcohol
  • I will stop eating dessert
  • I won’t play video games

Goals, however, are difficult to set because they have the quality of accountability that is missing in resolutions. A properly set goal includes a specific and measurable description of WHAT is to be ACHIEVED and BY WHEN! Sounds simple, but in reality there are 5 main reasons we fail to achieve goals, including fear of failure, scrutiny from others, and ignorance on the importance of effective goal setting! Research shows that, despite our knowing that ALL high-achieving people do it, only 3% of our population will set and write down goals. Yet EVERYONE seems to freely set Resolutions…and I’d bet 97% of all resolutions set get broken…

Don’t get me wrong, setting Resolutions is valuable and KEEPING TO THEM is possible, but doing so involves a lot of self discipline and will power. For example, I’m proud to say that I kept one of my 2015 resolutions and didn’t eat ice cream all year…but it wasn’t easy! Ice cream was presented to me many times, especially with 3 kids who have a lot of birthday parties and social activities to attend

Here’s a video taken by Abigail (on our 1st daddy-daughter date of 2016) of my first taste of ice cream in over a year. This year’s resolutions include a re-commitment to NO Ice-Cream…I am also adding SODA to the list of no-no’s…additionally I am resolved to drink 5 gallons of water every week…limiting alcohol consumption to no more than 2 occasions per week). All of those are Resolutions…but if I am good about keeping them, I will achieve my GOAL of losing 20 pounds by April 1st. I will check in next year and let you know how I do. But do you see the difference between Resolutions and Goals?

Jeff Klubeck New Year's Resolution- No Ice Cream

Personally, I still set resolutions because they focus on behavioral change…and all goal achievement is predicated on changing behaviors. Whether you set goals, resolutions or both, I wish you much success in both for 2016, but always remember to mind the gap!

During my visit to London for the 2012 Summer Games I got inspired for a blog series. In the London Underground, “Mind the Gap” is the constant warning to see and beware of the space between the platform and the train door literally a matter of life and death! Boarding my blog, however, is a 2-minute focus on the valuable difference between words or concepts that, without much thought, are used interchangeably.

Cookies and Cocktails was a HIT!  Yes, tt’s that time of year again…GIRL SCOUT cookie time!  I am the proud father of an amazing Girl Scout, Abigail, who has been enjoying her time with Troupe 3121 for over 4 years.  I’m happy to see her learning so many life skills through the great experiences and friendships Abigail gets through Girl Scouts.

troop 3121 Get A Klu Cookies and CocktailsAnd, let’s face it:  the cookies are delicious!  While I maintain some great eating habits (kale smoothies, wheatgrass shots, no ice cream or soda, 5 gallons of water a week), I cannot resist good, old-fashioned girl scout cookie (my favorite is…whichever one I am eating!).

Naturally, I’m excited to help my daughter reach her Cookie sale goals and I took an idea to “my club”, The University Club,  when I asked the food and beverage director (Jeff Apodaca) if he could pair wine/beer/cocktails with each flavor of Girl Scout Cookie and do an event…well, he LOVED my idea and the event took place last Wednesday the 15th…I am hoping it was successful enough to repeat this year or in years to come!

Cookies and Cocktails, Get A Klu, Troop 3121, Girl ScoutsI am SO grateful to the University Club for taking my idea and running with it. I was JUST hoping there would be pairings, but they generously gave a FREE DRINK ticket to everyone who bought cookies!

I know that many of you wanted to get to this great event, but couldn’t…so while I work with The University ClubShannon Parsons, Cookies and Cocktails, the University Club, Get A Klu to see about doing more events like this in the future, you can still buy your cookies, donate to operation thin mints and support Abigail with an online purchase!

Online Cookie sales benefit my daughter’s Troupe 3121 from Rancho Penasquitos.

Online sales have all your favorites, including Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and more!

Online Cookie sales give you the option of delivery by mail OR in person!  We will gladly come see you wherever you need us to!  Thank you so much to everyone who supports Abigail and Troupe 3121 this year!

To Your Success!

Remember all that goal setting insight I gave?earlier this year? Well just because we’re closing out the first quarter doesn’t mean all the talk about goal setting is going to stop. In fact, it’s just beginning. Yes, that’s right, accomplishing the many goals we set at the start of the year is starting to happen. Achieving goals?is one of my favorite things about goal setting. For me, goal setting encompasses all areas of my life. I set goals for business, health, relationships, and I even set bucket list goals.

These past 4 days, ?have been dedicated to my bucket list goal of taking a road trip to Spring Training with my son AJ. AJ is my Little League all star, so I knew he would enjoy Spring Training just as much as me. This trip felt like Father’s Day the entire time. It will be an experience I’ll remember forever and as a bonus, I was able to achieve one of my bucket list goals. Just a glimpse of our Spring Training Adventure…

AJ hit a grand slam with all the autographs he got, including this one from World Champion Center Fielder Willie Wilson. AJ himself plays Center Field so it was a treat for him to meet guys doing what he does in the big leagues.

Bucket List Get A Klu Spring Training Autographs

We had the opportunity to watch 4 spring training games and got up close and personal views of our favorite players in action!

Oh and look who I got to fist bump with? None other than Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman. This was truly an honor.

Bucket List Get A Klu Spring Training Fist Bump

I recommend everyone have at least one bucket list goal because it gives you something to look forward to and it helps you realize that setting and accomplishing goals can be both fun and enjoyable. My other baseball related bucket list goals for the year include: ?Managing a Little League team to the Tournament of Champions and Attending a Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

If you haven’t already set bucket list goals this year, no fear! It’s never too late to set a goal. I encourage you to set a bucket list goal and then share it with me. If you already have bucket list goals, I would love to hear them too. Let me know in the comments and if you’re stuck on how to set bucket list goals, or any of your goals for that matter, you can always sign up for my complimentary coaching so we can get your goals in order.

Coaching While Driving? Celebrating the Big 5-0!

To kick off 2016, I created a series of Drive-By Coaching videos on goal setting. Now I’m back with a new Drive-By Coaching video and I’m here to celebrate the BIG 5-0 in the latest edition of Drive-By Coaching. No I’m not talking about 50 videos, being 50 years old (I still got a few years) , or a 50th anniversary. What I AM talking about is the celebration of it being 50 days into 2016! Can you believe we are nearing the end of Q1? This means NOW?is the perfect time to take inventory on where you’re at with the goals and resolutions you set at the beginning of the year.

First, I’d like to ask you a question: Would you be willing to give away 1/7th of your income? I’m not talking about investing or donating. I mean just throwing it out the window!?Most of you will?immediately say?NO. Well 50 days into the year is about 1/7th of the year, and if you are already falling behind on your goals (or if you still don’t have goals), you are essentially giving away 1/7 of your resources for achieving MORE this year.

Coaching Get A Klu ResolutionsNow, two more questions?: How are you doing with your resolutions? How are you doing on your goals for Q1 and your annual goals?

If you don?t have positive/measurable answers, then maybe you SKIPPED GOAL SETTING or have ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY in your life. Don’t worry, there is still plenty of time left in the year, but before you know it, we?ll be 100 days in, then halfway through the year!

Catch my full Drive-By Coaching video on Facebook to ensure you’re able to CELEBRATE the big 5-0 rather than read?that you’re already falling back into new habits.

If you want to make sure you’re getting the latest Drive-By Coaching videos, join The Klu Yard on Facebook. My videos are posted on Facebook?first before anywhere else.
